Eagles rally for another late win, 27-24
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Nothing was going right for the Philadelphia Eagles when Donovan McNabb(notes) decided to give a pep talk.
Then it was time for another comeback win.
David Akers(notes) kicked a 32-yard field goal with 1:48 remaining and the Eagles rallied for a 27-24 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday.
A week ago, McNabb led the Eagles (7-4) to a late touchdown in a 24-20 win at Chicago. It was the first time Philadelphia came from behind in the final quarter and won since a 33-25 victory at Washington on Nov. 11, 2007.
“We knew we can do it,” McNabb said. “We just had to get it done.”
So what did McNabb say to his teammates?
“You got to get your point across,” he said. “There’s nothing soft-spoken on the sideline. When you have a talented team, sometimes you need to bring the nasty attitude out of them.”
Akers made all four of his field goal attempts, extending his streak to 16. Asante Samuel(notes) had two interceptions and McNabb threw for 260 yards and one touchdown.
Jason Campbell(notes) had 231 yards passing and two TDs for Washington, which fell short at the end for the second straight week. The injury-depleted Redskins (3-8) lost 7-6 at Dallas last Sunday.
“It’s hard to come back after a loss like we had last week and this week,” Washington coach Jim Zorn said. “I hope that we talk sense and sanity into what we find ourselves in. And that’s difficult.”
Trying to set an early tone and perhaps underestimating the Redskins, the Eagles opened with an onside kick that backfired. Then, already playing without star running back Brian Westbrook(notes), the Eagles lost big-play receiver DeSean Jackson(notes) in the second half to a concussion.
Four straight second-half possessions lasted just three plays and the Eagles trailed 24-16 when they got the ball at their 10. Right before that, McNabb gathered the troops.
“I was proud of him just stepping up and talking over,” coach Andy Reid said. “He was into it. He said, ‘Hey, we’re scoring.”’
McNabb drove the offense 90 yards for a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. He connected with Jason Avant(notes)for 46 and 20 yards. Leonard Weaver’s(notes) 12-yard run took Philly to the 1 and set up Eldra Buckley’s(notes) first career TD run. McNabb shoveled to LeSean McCoy(notes), who broke several tackles to get the conversion.
After forcing a punt, the Eagles moved 66 yards to set up the winning kick. McNabb hit rookie Jeremy Maclin(notes) for a 35-yard gain on the drive.
“We knew we have the talent and ability to do it,” Weaver said of the comeback wins.
The Redskins played without defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth(notes) (ankle), running back Clinton Portis(notes) (concussion), tight end Chris Cooley(notes) (ankle), and cornerback DeAngelo Hall(notes) (sprained MCL).
But they still pushed the Eagles to the end.
“It’s definitely frustrating in a lot of ways, just the way we lose,” Campbell said. “To see all the guys give a great effort, all the guys out there fighting, a lot of teams would have packed it in. But these guys fight to the end. There’s no giving up.”
The Redskins went ahead 21-16 on their first possession in the second half, driving 80 yards on nine plays and converting three times on third-and-long. Campbell hit Fred Davis(notes) for 29 yards on third-and-10, then completed a 35-yard pass to Devin Thomas(notes) on third-and-7 before connecting with Davis on a 10-yard TD pass on another third-and-7.
Justin Tryon’s(notes) interception set up Shaun Suisham’s(notes) 25-yard field goal that made it 24-16.
Samuel intercepted Campbell for the second time in the final minute of the first half and returned it 17 yards to the Redskins 28. Akers nailed a 41-yarder for a 16-14 lead.
The Redskins needed just four plays to find the end zone after Quinton Ganther(notes) returned the opening onside kick 25 yards to the Eagles 24. Campbell scored on a 1-yard run.
Akers kicked a 29-yarder to cut it to 7-3 just after Michael Vick(notes) nearly scored his first TD since 2006, running 4 yards to the 1.

Relf, Dixon lead Miss. St. pass Ole Miss 41-27
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP)—Coaches always say they take one game at a time, but the clock in Mississippi State’s locker room tells a different story.
That timepiece had been counting down to the Egg Bowl matchup against No. 20 Mississippi since first-year coach Dan Mullen took over last winter, and when it hit zero the Bulldogs put on quite the show.
Anthony Dixon rushed for 133 yards and set the school single-season rushing mark, Chris Relf rushed for 131 yards and accounted for three touchdowns and the Bulldogs manhandled the Rebels 41-27 on Saturday.
“This program is on the rise,” Mullen said, “maybe to the contrary of what some others are saying around the state.”
It was the most points scored by the Bulldogs (5-7, 3-5 SEC) in the 106-year-old series since a 41-14 victory in 1917, and the most Ole Miss (8-4, 4-4) has given up this season.
The Egg Bowl was supposed to be a victory lap for the Rebels, who appeared on their way to their second straight nine-win season for the first time since 1961-62, second place in the SEC West and a balmy bowl appearance somewhere in central Florida.
Dixon and Relf had other plans, pushing Mississippi State to more than four wins for just the second time since 2000 by accounting for 64 percent of the offense. The Bulldogs treated the regular-season finale like a bowl and made the home team winners for the 10th time in 11 games.
“In a rivalry game like this, for those 3 hours you’ve got to want it,” Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said.
And it was clear in the second half once Relf and Dixon got rolling that Mississippi State wanted it more.
Relf has been Tyson Lee’s backup and shared playing time all season, but was often given the short hook after mistakes. This time he played most of the second half and dominated Ole Miss with 131 yards rushing, averaging 10 yards per carry on his first 10 and 8.7 overall.
The run specialist also stung the Rebels with touchdown passes of 2 and 34 yards, rallying the Bulldogs from a 13-10 halftime deficit.
The second scoring pass—a 34-yard lob to Chad Bumphis, who broke three tackles on the play—came on fourth and 9. He also mined the edge of the Ole Miss defensive front on the option for several big runs, clinching the game with a 10-yard power rush with 10:56 left.
“Chris got it rolling and got a feel for what was going on and we were able to run the football,” Mullen said. “I think they had 11 guys on the line of scrimmage and we were able to run the football.”
Mississippi State’s defense set the tone early, stopping Ole Miss short of the goal-line and forcing two field goals in the first half. The young Bulldogs secondary finished off the job in the second half when Corey Broomfield returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown and Charles Mitchell picked off his second pass of the game.
The Rebels’ only success came on long pass plays for touchdowns—20 yards to Shay Hodge, who became the first receiver at Ole Miss with 1,000 yards in a season (1,023), 48 yards to Markeith Summers and 52 yards to Dexter McCluster.
The Bulldogs mostly held McCluster in check, allowing just 82 yards rushing to snap a four-game streak of 100-plus against SEC opponents. And though Jevan Snead finished with 275 yards passing, the three interceptions were costly.
The Bulldogs carried the golden egg-shaped trophy given to the winner to the end zone and celebrated with fans after the victory, dancing as a group to “Who Let the Dogs Out.”
Ole Miss, on the other hand, got out of Starkville as quickly as possible. The buses pulled away from the stadium a half hour after Mullen saluted the crowd over the public address system.
“It is a sick feeling,” Nutt said. “It is not what we planned.”
Dixon finished the season with 1,391 yards in 11 games, eight more than James Johnson’s 1998 record set over 13 games, and now owns every significant rushing record at Mississippi State.
His dive to catch the pylon for a 2-yard score got the Bulldogs offense rolling and set the tone for a running game that couldn’t be stopped. Mississippi State had 317 of its 412 total yards on the ground.
“I had a lot of fun,” Dixon said. “We beat our rival. I knew a bunch of them dudes on the other side. We were talking back and forth the whole game.”
Concussion expected to sideline Roethlisberger
PITTSBURGH (AP)—Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger(notes) is expected to miss Sunday’s NFL game against the Baltimore Ravens because of a concussion.
Persons familiar with Roethlisberger’s status spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Saturday because the team has not made an announcement.
The development would force Dennis Dixon(notes)—who has thrown only one pass in two NFL seasons—to make his first NFL start in a game the defending champion Steelers might need to win to make the playoffs.
Roethlisberger practiced all week despite sustaining his fourth concussion since 2006 during a 27-24 overtime loss against Kansas City last Sunday. On Thursday, during his only interview of the week, he said he had been cleared to play, joking he passed “thousands of tests.”
Roethlisberger, however, experienced headaches resulting from the concussion — his head struck the knee of Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson—and he began debating the wisdom of playing after consulting with the team’s medical staff.

Hawkins gets another year despite 4 losing seasons
BOULDER, Colo. (AP)—What does University of Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn have to say to doubters and detractors who contend he’s sticking with football coach Dan Hawkins only because he couldn’t come up with the $3.1 million buyout and the millions more it would take to replace him?
Twelve seconds of silence.
“Yeah,” Bohn responds when asked if he’s still there. “I’m thinking about what I want to say.”
Another 18 seconds of silence.
“Our financial, uh … Can you ask me the question again so I can get a little excited? I slept in my clothes last night. I’m a little slow,” asks Bohn, who flew back into Denver early Thursday after accompanying the men’s basketball team to the Maui Invitational in Hawaii.
So, what does he have to say to those critics who will insist that money and not merit guided his decision to keep a coach who is 16-32 with a 2-20 road record and a 10-21 mark in the Big 12?
“Well, money is always a consideration in big-time college football,” Bohn said. “It wasn’t THE determining factor. The bottom line was Dan Hawkins is the right coach for CU at this time.”
Hawkins has cleaned up a program tarnished by scandal under Gary Barnett, but he’s been unable to find success on the field and has endured four straight losing seasons, which usually lead to moving trucks, not reiterations of support.
The Buffaloes (3-8, 2-5) wrap up their season Friday against Big 12 North champion Nebraska (8-3, 5-2) at Folsom Field in a game that many thought would be Hawkins’ farewell.
Chancellor Philip DiStefano and Bohn informed the team after its walkthrough on Thanksgiving Day of their coach’s status to quell doubts about his future.
“It was really important for me to look these kids in the eye and Dan in the eye rather than being out in Maui” and doing it by phone, Bohn said.
DiStefano said he supports Bohn’s decision to honor Hawkins’ contract, which runs through 2012.
“Dan represents the university’s values on and off the field, and his team has been competitive this year,” DiStefano said. “He has done all that we have asked him to do, and although we all desire more victories, we also recognize starting over with a new coach right now takes us away from, not closer to, our goals for CU football.”
Of the Buffs’ eight losses this season, three have been by a touchdown or less and two others, at West Virginia and Texas, were competitive before fourth-quarter flameouts.
Hawkins signed a five-year contract in 2006 after leaving Boise State, where he was 53-11, and was given an extension 13 months ago before injuries unraveled the Buffs, who finished 5-7 last year.
Hawkins declared “10 wins, no excuses” as his mantra for this season, but the Buffs quickly rendered that goal laughable, leading to widespread dissatisfaction with Hawkins, who became increasingly defensive.
Bohn asked that Buffs supporters now rally around the program and its players, if not Hawkins.
“The program is bigger than any one individual and the institution is bigger than any member of the leadership team or anybody associated with this outstanding university,” Bohn said. “And I recognize that there’s a schism among the fan base. We’re going to work hard to close that.”
Bohn said he expects some backlash.
“I’m certainly aware that people on both sides of this issue are passionate,” he said. “And that’s why I believe one of my biggest challenges will be trying to collectively put that passion together because when we are unified, Folsom Field and our football program can compete with anybody in the nation.”
Hawkins will almost certainly have to have a winning season next year to keep his boss’s trust and his job.
“Clearly, I believe the longer a coach or anyone is associated with a program that the scoreboard ultimately becomes an important barometer,” Bohn said.
Hawkins had more votes of confidence than wins this season, but as the losses piled up, more and more calls came for his ouster, and the din heightened when blue chipper Darrell Scott bolted the Buffs at midseason.
Hawkins acknowledged this week that he regretted recruiting his son, Cody, to Boulder to be his quarterback because his kid unfairly became a lightning rod for critics before his benching at midseason.
Some students took to wearing powder blue to games this season instead of gold and black to protest the program’s slide into mediocrity. It was the color the team wore from 1981-84 when they went 10-34 overall during one of the worst stretches in school history.
That stretch is now rivaled by Hawkins era, and the question now is about the color green: Will alumni and boosters open up their wallets with Hawkins given a fifth season instead of a pink slip?

Rodgers has 3 TDs in Packers’ 34-12 win vs. Lions
DETROIT (AP)—The Detroit Lions used to take a lot of pride in playing on Thanksgiving.
Lately, the Lions have been getting embarrassed when the nation tunes in to watch them.
Aaron Rodgers(notes) matched a career high with three touchdown passes and Charles Woodson(notes) grabbed two of his team’s four interceptions, giving the Green Bay Packers a 34-12 win over Detroit.
The Lions have lost six straight games on the holiday, setting a franchise record, by an average of 23.2 points and eight of nine in the showcase game. The latest loss was an emotional setback for Detroit (2-9) four days after Matthew Stafford’s(notes) gutsy play capped its biggest comeback win since 1957.
“It’s a different feeling in this locker room—especially on national television to come out like that,” Detroit center Dominic Raiola(notes) said.
Before its recent slide, Detroit won four straight and nine of 12 on Thanksgiving before ex-general manager Matt Millen arrived in 2001 and made a lackluster franchise awful.
Green Bay (7-4) has won three straight since losing to Tampa Bay to improve its postseason prospects.
“We can’t talk about the playoffs yet,” Packers receiver Donald Driver(notes) said.
Stafford, playing with a sore non-throwing shoulder, threw one touchdown pass and four interceptions. He threw five TD passes in Sunday’s win over Cleveland after trailing by 21.
“When you’ve got to throw the ball every down to try to get back into it when you’re behind, guys are going to be all over it,” Stafford said.
Kevin Smith’s(notes) longest run was 6 yards and he finished with 43 on 18 carries for the Lions.
“This is the type of game that you hit your head on a wall about,” Smith said.
The Lions looked as if they were building off their rare momentum by recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff and with Stafford’s TD pass to Calvin Johnson(notes).
But the Packers scored 27 unanswered points in the second and third quarters to turn the game into a familiar rout.
“We had to dig deep,” Rodgers said. “There’s a lot of resolve in this team and I’m confident in our team moving forward.”
The Packers have won nine straight against the Lions overall, and coach Mike McCarthy is 8-0 against them.
Woodson returned his second interception for a score late in the game and struck a Heisman Trophy pose in the end zone. Woodson won the award in 1997 while leading Michigan to a national championship.
“Being here in Michigan with all the fans I know I still have here,” Woodson said. “I just wanted to remind those guys what it was like back when I was in school.”
Woodson also forced and recovered a fumble and had a sack, capping an afternoon that included an announcement of his $2 million gift to the new University of Michigan Mott Children’s Hospital.
“It was a good day,” Woodson said with a grin.
It was for Rodgers, too, as usual against the Lions.
Rodgers was 28 of 39 for 348 yards and connected with Driver, Donald Lee(notes) and James Jones(notes) for scores. He has played Detroit four times and those passing totals rank among the top eight in his career.
Driver had seven receptions for 142 yards, including a 68-yard catch, and a TD that gave the Packers a 20-7 lead midway through the third quarter.
Rodgers and Driver both credited their much-maligned offensive line.
“There were a couple times when I held the ball for 4 or 5 seconds—maybe more,” Rodgers said. “When you have that kind of time with the kind of players that we have, we feel like we’re going to make plays.”
Green Bay played without cornerback Al Harris(notes) and linebacker Aaron Kampman(notes), both of whom had season-ending knee injuries in last week’s win.
“Our defense was huge,” McCarthy said. “That was the No. 1 factor in our success.”
Stafford was only 20 of 43 yards for 213 yards, and his four interceptions were one fewer than he had earlier this season. He was listed as doubtful for the game because of his shoulder injury, but his decision-making seemed to be more of a problem than his health.
“I don’t think (the injured shoulder) was a factor at all,” Stafford said.
Johnson, who was questionable with hand and knee injuries, only had a 9-yard catch to go with his 1-yard score.
In Detroit’s last game, Stafford broke an NFL rookie record with 422 yards passing, became the youngest player to throw five TD passes in a game and drew praise for playing with a dislocated, non-throwing shoulder on the final untimed play.
“I told him after the game, ‘Around the league, we respect a guy who will come in hurt,”’ Woodson said.
NOTES: Detroit rookie TE Brandon Pettigrew(notes), a first-round pick, hurt his left knee on the first drive and did not return. .. Green Bay OT Chad Clifton(notes) (hamstring) and Jordy Nelson(notes) (shoulder) were injured during the game. … Stafford joined Dan Marino, Dave Krieg and Vince Ferragamo as the four QBs who have thrown four INTs a game after throwing at least five TDs since 1970, according to STATS, LLC. … The Lions are 33-35-2 on Thanksgiving.
