blog： Vipers duo receive All-Stars call

Newcastle Vipers netminder Andrew Verner and defenceman Jez Lundin have been called up to the North All-Stars squad by team manager Dave Matsos.

The duo will feature in a match that pits the best of the North against their Southern counterparts at Coventry Skydome on Thursday, 19 February.

A Vipers club spokesman said: “Andrew and Jez are fully deserving of their All-Star call up.

“They will represent the North and Newcastle with pride.”

The team will be selected from players at Edinburgh, Belfast, Manchester, Sheffield and Newcastle.

Each team will supply two imports and two British members to form a 20-man squad.

Verner, 36, joined the Vipers from Austrian outfit Klagenfurter Athletiksport-Club at the beginning of the season and has kept three clean sheets so far this season.

Lundin, 20, is one of the club’s most promising talents and received a Great Britain call-up in 2008 for his displays in the Vipers’ rearguard.

Elite League winners Sheffield Steelers ended Cardiff Devils’ play-off hopes with a 5-2 victory in Saturday’s first semi-final in Nottingham.

“I think most of the guys are going to stay and watch the second game, which is something that I commend and I am very supportive of because they want to know who they are playing tomorrow.”

blog：Panthers face Belfast in opener

Nottingham Panthers will begin their Elite League season at home to Belfast Giants on Saturday, 5 September.

This is followed by a trip to Coventry in the Challenge Cup a day later.

Their first home match against arch-rivals Sheffield will take place on Saturday, 7 November and the two sides also meet in Nottingham on Boxing Day.

All eight Elite League clubs will take part in a new competition likened to cricket’s Twenty20, which will take place in Sheffield in October.

Panthers coach Corey Neilson said: “The cliche certainly applies this season, there will be no easy games in any competition.

“We’re playing two warm-up games in Hull across the Bank Holiday weekend, then there’s the big game against Sheffield in the Charity Shield.

“The league starts with the visit of Belfast. We’ll be ready and I can’t wait.”

Newcastle Vipers have signed Bakersfield Condors defenceman Ryan Mahrle to their roster for the 2009-10 Elite League season.

Mahrle, 24, is the fourth East Coast Hockey League import to arrive on Tyneside this summer and is excited by the prospect of British ice hockey.

“After a couple of years in the ECHL I was looking for a change, and a new challenge,” he said.

“Playing in the UK with the Vipers is just what I was looking for.”

Mahrle is joined at the Arena by forward duo Jason Tejchma and Mike Berry who were signed from ECHL side Mississippi Sea Wolves in May, and Todd Griffith who also announced his return to Newcastle after a spell with Johnstown Chiefs.

Coach Rob Wilson had previously targeted strengthening his defence and believes Mahrle represents good business for the club.

The holders of this view claim that the origins of our highest accomplishments —- liturgy, literature, and law —- can be traced to a play impulse which, paradoxically, we see most purely enjoyed by young beasts and children. Our sports, in this rather happy, nonfatalistic view of human nature, are more splendid creations of the nondatable, transspecies play impulse.
